Tears of Joy

To people who don't know me well, I can seem a bit cynical and hard-bitten. Well, I'm here to let you guys in on a little secret....I'm very sentimental when it comes to the holidays. In fact, when it comes time for Christmas I buy extra tissues because I know I'm going to end up sobbing my eyes out over certain movies and specials that air this time of year. So, here is a short (and probably incomplete) list of what will make me cry...

"It's a Wonderful Life" ~ George Bailey gets into a spot of trouble (that was really no fault of his own) and wishes he'd never been born. His guardian angel shows him what the world is like without him, giving him a new appreciation of his contributions.

When the waterworks begin: From the time that George gets back to his real life (and learns what his friends have done for him) until about an hour after the final credits roll, I'm a slobbery, wet, sobbing pile of mush. It's quite horrifying for anyone to witness, so I try to only watch this with my husband (after 20 years, he's used to the goo.)

"Miracle on 34th Street" ~ A Macy's Santa claims to be the real Santa. Who's to say he isn't?

When the waterworks begin: When little Suzie (tiny, adorable Natalie Wood) sees 'Santa' speaking Dutch to the little immigrant girl, and then intermittently throughout the rest of the movie, coming on full strength again during the final close-up of Kris' cane.

"Nightmare Before Christmas" ~Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town yearns for something a little different, so he tries his hand at Christmas

When the Waterworks Begin:
~ during the "What's This?" number. I love Jack's wonderment at everything Christmas. Yeah, I'm a sap. Wanna fight about it? I mean, watch it...how can this not warm your heart?

"Meet Me in St. Louis" ~ A family in St. Louis experience a year of ups and downs surrounding the opening of the World's Fair.

When the Waterworks Begin: Heartbroken Judy Garland sings "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" to a heartbroken Margaret O'Brien. Gah! Just thinking about it makes me all vklempt.

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" ~Oddball Red-Nosed Reindeer helps the residents of Christmas Town appreciate the strengths of misfits.

When the Waterworks Begin: On the Island of Misfit Toys. Little Suzie (whose oddity appears to be that she is bi-polar) claims she doesn't have any dreams left to dream, and I break down. No, seriously...this is airing on TV tonight, I'll give a dollar to whoever can tell me what exactly is wrong with the Suzie doll that makes her a misfit.

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" ~The Christmas hating Grinch tries to ruin the holiday for a bunch of annoying Christmas loving Whos.

When the Waterworks Begin: At the end when the Grinch, himself, carves the roast beast.

Okay, I've bared my soul...let's see yours. What holiday movies make you cry?

Love, Actually will make me cry.
Most movies will make me cry if they put that music during an emotional scene.

My absolute favorite Christmas show is Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. I get all teary-eyed when Bob sings "Keep Christmas With You" for the deaf girl and all the kids sign the song. And when Big Bird gets lost waiting for Santa.

I may just have to put the movie on tonight!

I don't cry much over Christmas movies, but my wife cries over everything. Even the commercials make her cry.

Yeah, It's a Wonderful Life gets me, every time. I have to watch it at least once in December (a dozen times is better).

Love Rudolph, too. I guess I'll have to dig out my copy to see that girl. And the Grinch . . . snuffle. Love it. Sob over it every time.

I'm like Rob's wife, though. And, I particularly get gooey over things like commercials when I'm tired. And, weddings. And, childbirth - that's a killer.

Ditto "It's a Wonderful Life" but for me it's Zuzu telling George about the bell.

The same scene between Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien in Meet Me In St. Louis. Pass the Kleenex, Kookie.

Love, Actually. Totally and completely does me in.

And of course, It's a Wonderful Life.

And maybe, the best Christmas movie ever....Christmas Vacation! There is always a tear shed when Eddie is on screen (of course, they are tears of laughter!)

I love It's a wonderful life. You'd be surprised at how many people have never seen it.

I have never seen Love, Actually. Guess that goes on my Netflix list. Thanks for the tip raidergirl and Stephanie.

Lynne, I'm a huge Sesame Street fan, but I haven't seen the Christmas Special. I need to get my hands on that.

I have been known to cry over commercials, Rob. I'm a sap.

Bookfool, it is so good to have you around again.

Chris, I'm already crying by that time. I think it's Clarence's inscription in the book that really gets me.

bybee, doesn't that kill you! Little Tootie is so devastated by it, she goes outside and KILLS her snowpeople. Urgh.

Stephanie, I love Christmas Vacation! One of my guilty pleasures. I love the scene where Clark and Eddie go shopping.

Erin, there are people who've never seen It's A Wonderful Life? !!??

Miracle on 34th Street is my absolute favorite of all the Christmas movies. I end up crying through practically the entire movie. :-)
